John Paul Abcede is an experienced copywriter, providing content for various print and online publications. He has since expanded his expertise to include search engine optimization and social media management. He is also a licensed Insurance Advisor and a Certified Investment Solicitor.
He has had published works since college, starting out with The LaSallian, the official student publication of De La Salle University-Manila. He later became the Sports Editor of Heraldo Filipino, De La Salle University-Dasmariñas’ student publication. It was during this time he won the PBA Press Corps Sportswriting Contest in 2003.
While finishing his AB Communication degree, Abcede contributed to several newspapers and magazines, some of which are Chalk Magazine and People’s Tonight. He also covered the 2005 Southeast Asian Games for the Philippine Daily Inquirer as a student correspondent, also serving as fulfillment of his practicum requirement for his Bachelor’s diploma.
A trailblazer and early adopter, he worked for online marketing company Flaunt Media Exchange Advertising as content analyst and headwriter in 2006. Assigned to different tasks, this is where he was able to practice skills such as content editing and accounts handling. In the same year, he became an official writer for UB Media, formerly known as UBelt.com, a pioneer collegiate sports news website.
From then on, Abcede’s career as a freelance writer flourished as he wrote articles for Animo Magazine, the Nike Summer League website, Hinge Inquirer Publications, Manila Bulletin, and GMAnews.tv, among others.
His first office-based work was for an offshoring company as a senior writer. Meanwhile, he was also taking gigs as an events coordinator assistant as well as a researcher and associate producer for a football TV magazine show.
Since 2010, JP worked as an editor for a KPO establishment as well as a Korean ESL institution. After that, his endeavors included being a web content writer for an SEO firm and a correspondent for The Manila Times. He then became a sportswriter and editor for a number of sports-related blogs, websites, and social media accounts under the AsianLogic umbrella of companies. He was also the official writer for the Philippine Superliga website for its first two seasons.
In the latter part of the decade, he focused on having a career in the financial services industry. A licensed Insurance Advisor since 2009, he passed the exam for Certified Investment Solicitor in 2017. The pandemic did not deter him as he transitioned to social media marketing and online lead generation to gather clients and generate sales via remote means.
In 2021, he returned to writing, working for Big Cat Software Solutions. Aside from publishing regular content on a variety of sports and gaming websites, he was tasked to compose press releases and copyedit marketing materials.
A well-rounded person, Abcede played bass guitar for the Don Bosco Music Ministry in high school and the CLA Pool of Talents in college. He plays board games during his free time and participates in bar quizzes on occasion. Additionally, he was a hotseat contestant in the final season of “Who Wants to be a Millionaire Philippines” and appeared on “Cash Cab Philippines”.
Energetic and lively, this native of Manila is determined, focused, and resourceful. He can accomplish different tasks and is knowledgeable on a variety of subjects. Besides music and sports, he also likes to read. He has a good command of the English and Filipino languages, can speak and understand basic Bisaya and Hiligaynon, and can identify certain languages in oral and written form as well.
